84th Oscar Animated Feature Updates (1/20/12)

Some quick updates tonight to the Animated Feature race. (I hope to have some more updates in other categories later this weekend.) Despite the Golden Globe win, I’m now thinking that Tintin might lose out to Rango. New in the top five are Kung Fu Panda 2 and Puss In Boots, both of which picked up multiple Annie nominations. Foreign language films have been fairly successful with this category in the past, so I am holding on to my prediction of Chico & Rita. Here are today’s rankings for the 84th Animated Feature race, with previous ranking shown in parenthesis after each entry.

1. Gore Verbinski for Rango (Predicted Winner) (previous rank 2)
2. Steven Spielberg for The Adventures Of Tintin: The Secret Of The Unicorn (previous rank 1)
3. Jennifer Yuh for Kung Fu Panda 2: The Kaboom Of Doom (previous rank 6)
4. Chris Miller for Puss In Boots (previous rank 8)
5. Tono Errando, Javier Mariscal and Fernando Trueba for Chico & Rita (previous rank 4)

Alternates:
6. Sarah Smith for Arthur Christmas (previous rank 3)
7. John Lasseter and Brad Lewis for Cars 2 (previous rank 11)
8. Ignacio Ferreras for Wrinkles (Arrugas) (previous rank 7)
9. Carlos Saldanha for Rio (previous rank 9)
10. Stephen J. Anderson and Don Hall for Winnie The Pooh (previous rank 5)
11. Jean-Loup Felicioli and Alain Gagnol for A Cat In Paris (Une Vie De Chat) (previous rank 10)
12. George Miller for Happy Feet 2 (previous rank 13)
13. Tomas Lunak for Alois Nebel (previous rank 12)
14. Kelly Asbury for Gnomeo And Juliet (previous rank 14)
15. Simon Wells for Mars Needs Moms (previous rank 15)
16. Mike Mitchell for Alvin And The Chipmunks 3: Chip-Wrecked (previous rank 16)
17. Mike Disa for Hoodwinked Too! Hood Vs. Evil (previous rank 18)

  1. I certainly hope Tintin loses out to Rango.

    a) Its a FAR better movie (in my opinion) and twice as creative.

    b) It fits better with my idea of "animation". Not that mo-capping isn't animating... but Tintin seems far further from "Drawn" than Rango does (even though obviously, neither of them were exactly "drawn")

    1. Some are saying that Tintin won't even get a nomination because of the mo-cap. I still have hesitations about whether the tech branches (sound, VFX) might push tintin into the lead, but I've heard that it's not as good, as you say, so I've moved it out of the top spot for now.

  2. Disappointing year of animations. I really wasn't a big fan of Rango and Tintin was solid but really nothing special at all.

    1. Yes, but in an odd way the disappointing years can be the most exciting, precisely because there's no clear set of nominees!

    2. Ahah true. Well I'm pulling for Tintin then ;)

    3. Yeah, I noticed that a lot of folks on AM are big fans of that one!

    1. Cool. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one making last minute changes!

  4. Yeah, the very last change is to call that there is going to be 6 BP Nominees.

    1. I'm sticking with 8 for this first year, unless until we get a better idea of how the new rules actually play out. But I also put my nominees in order, so if there are less (or more, I'm only counting the ones up until that point as right.

  5. Seems like Nickelodeeon studios will finally get the Oscar they've been hoping for. It's gonna be Tintin or Rango, and nothing else.

    1. I think this is definitely true. In a year like this I have heard a lot of talk about the possibility of some of the lesser known foreign animations making the nominee list, but I haven't heard about any one of them being talked about to take the prize... So congratulations to Nickelodeon!
