  1. Have a question, and please forgive me if this was asked before.

If any of the actors, directors, writers, etc. allowed to vote for themselves? Because that may be a little unfair.

    1. They are indeed allowed to vote for themselves in most of the main categories (acting, directing, writing, etc.)

There are some special rules in some of the technical categories, like best song, that don't allow this, but in general members get to vote for their own film.

I suppose it is a little bit unfair to first time nominees who aren't members, but for everyone else it probably cancels itself out pretty evenly.

  2. You should be invited as Academy Awards member for doing this incredible job.

I was just wondering though that when they get the invitations, are they officially in or they can reject it

    1. Thanks!

After they get the invitations, it is assumed that most of them accept, but they are able to reject if they wish.

I have located a few high-profile folks who have rejected the invites and listed them on the "Non-Members" page here:

  4. I don't have any official sources but it is said that Joan Chen (actor, The Last Emperor, Lust, Caution) and the director Kaige Chen (director, The Emperor and the Assassin, Farewell My Concubine) are both members.

    1. Thank you my friend. This is perfect, since once I know who to look for I can often find references that I wouldn't have known to seek out before. In this case, I was able to find references for both Joan Chen and Kaige Chen!

  5. The members of animators branch vote also for the short films?

for example: Alessandro Carloni for what vote?

    1. Thanks Rob. You are quite right that the animators and short films are in the same branch. When I first started I just noted the field that people were listed in, but I need to go back through and edit those to read more accurately as "Short Film And Feature Animation Branch"

  7. I don't know if you missed the news because it was the Fourth of July weekend, but last Saturday, July 2, all the industry trades reported that Oscar-winning director Michael Cimino passed away at the age of 77. RIP.

    1. Thanks Alex!

It's actually the Academy's huge invite list that is slowing me down. I try to record reactions from as many of the new invitees as possible, and with such a large list it's taking me longer than expected to get through them all.

I'll be doing updates to all the pages by the end of this weekend to finally get the new folks added, and I've got Cimino's death and a few other updates that will all show up at the same time.

      Thanks again!

  10. Just so no one gets confused, Carol Channing was only in the Broadway incarnation of Hello, Dolly! Barbra Streisand was in the film version.

    1. Great catch Alex! I'll correct this in my next round of updates. I have her associated with that role so much in my mind that I forgot this detail myself!
