Pictured: While the Academy is often criticized for having too many older members, they do make room for the youngsters once in a while. Haley Joel Osment was invited to join the Academy at the age of 11, after his Oscar-nominated role in The Sixth Sense. Because Academy membership lasts for life, there is always a risk in admitting younger members. Someone who is universally recognized today may not be as popular down the line, and there is always the danger that their professional path may shift away from the film industry altogether. Thankfully Osment, now in his early 20’s, has continued with his acting career both onscreen and on Broadway.

As a reminder, Bold font is for confirmed AMPAS members that we are able to document conclusively. Standard font is for confirmed invitees, most of whom presumably accept. Italic font is for those believed to be members, but whose status has not been verified. Read why we are so cautious HERE.
