Updated 6/8/2013
Pictured: Stunt coordinator Jack Gill is an Academy member, and part of the catch-all “Member At Large” category that includes casting directors, title designers and others who work in the film industry, but do not have their own branch. For two decades he has been petitioning to create an Oscar for stunt coordinators. The question seems to spark a perennial debate not only about the artistry of his specific craft, but also about the nature of the movie industry itself, with purists and popularists taking predictable stands on whether action films and blockbusters receive too much or too little support from Hollywood.
As a reminder, Bold font is for confirmed AMPAS members that we are able to document conclusively. Standard font is for confirmed invitees, most of whom presumably accept. Italic font is for those believed to be members, but whose status has not been verified. Read why we are so cautious HERE.
I will be adding more pictures, as well as credits, awards, and of course new names as the project proceeds. And don’t forget to send me recommendations of Oscar voters I may have missed!

Er, Barbara Bel Geddes is not going to be able to vote due to the fact trhat she's well, not around anymore.
ReplyDeleteAH! Thanks for that. I try to check the dates on IMDB as I go, but I must have missed hers. I've taken her off the list now.
DeleteIf someone passes long after you make a list like this, is he or she removed?
ReplyDeleteGreat question. My hope is to keep this list up to date, adding new names as I find them and removing people when I hear that they have passed on.
DeleteBut I haven't really thought through the details of how I should watch the obituaries, particularly for the less famous Academy members. I am thinking that the most famous will be removed as I hear about them, several others after the Oscars' In Memoriam reel, and then maybe once a year I'll do a quick check through all the IMDB pages to look for people I might have missed. Between this and comments from readers, hopefully it will stay as accurate as possible.
And the Academy also keeps an In Memoriam page on their website which I'll be checking: http://www.oscars.org/academy/members/memoriam.html
DeleteWell, I asked because Robin Gibb sadly passed on.
DeleteThanks for this.
DeleteI just heard about this on the news on my way home from work, and instantly wondered if that might have prompted your original question. I've moved him off of here, but made a note in case I manage to get an In Memoriam section up at some point.
Changwei Gu (oscar nominee, cinematographer, Farewell My Concubine, Ju Dou, director, Peacock)
ReplyDeleteExcellent. I've added Gu in italics above. (I'm still working my way through all the nominees for the technical categories, so hadn't gotten that far yet). I'll look for a source too.
DeleteGiamatti is not a member
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I can see Giamatti being one of those folks who might turn down the Academy's invite. Do you know if he's said this in an interview somewhere? If I can find a link I'll move him to the "Non-Members" page.
