Here are today’s rankings for the 84th Oscar Supporting Actress race, with previous ranking shown in parenthesis after each entry. In December, it looked as if Jessica Chastain was picking up momentum for her body of work this year, so I briefly flirted with the idea that the big awards might follow suit. Yesterday’s Golden Globe win solidifies Octavia Spencer in the top position, and thus I am returning her to the front-runner position, where she had been since October (prior to that I had mistakenly placed Viola Davis in the lead, with Spencer second). The moral of the story is that I need to stick with my instincts and not be easily swayed by mid-December critics lists from across the country.
I have also added two supporting performances from Alexandra Roach and Olivia Colman in The Iron Lady to my long list of contenders, and I have dropped Nia Long’s outstanding performance in Mooz-lum, because the film apparently isn’t eligible for any awards this year.
