84th Oscar Documentary Short Updates (4/14/11)

EDITORS NOTE: These predictions were made in April 2011 and reflect what my thinking was at that time.  I have updated my predictions since then, but leave these on the blog for a historical record. For the most updated list of predictions, go to the Tracker Pages in the upper right hand corner of this blog.

Predicting the Documentary Shorts race requires a mix of strategies. Like the animated and live action shorts, documentary shorts aren’t seen by many people and don’t get much media buzz. But like the Documentary Feature category, they have special rules regarding qualifying dates (for the 84th Oscars it is Sept 1, 2010-Dec 31, 2011), and voting rules that include shortlists, preferential voting and required screenings.

My research in this category hasn’t been as extensive as some of the other ones. (I’ll work on that in the future). But for now, here is today’s attempt at predicting the 84th Oscar Documentary Short race (with previous ranking shown in parenthesis after each entry).

1. Mothersbane (Predicted Winner) (previous rank 1)
2. Kawalek Lata (New)
3. Slaying The Dragon Reloaded: Asian Women In Hollywood And Beyond (New)
4. Save The Farm (New)
5. Maya Deren’s Sink (previously ranked 9 in the Live Action Short category)

Alternates:
6. Once Upon A Rooftop (New)
7. Fwd: Update On My Life (New)
8. Heirlooms (New)
9. The Unspoken (New)
10. Danny And Annie (New)
11. Kaffir Culture (New)

As always, check the Tracker Pages in the upper right hand corner of this blog for the most updated predictions in all categories!
