  1. Viggo Mortenson and Brad Pitt would be considered leads if they would be considered at all. I saw Beginners and I saw Drive. Of those two I would have to saw Albert Brooks could win the award. I think he is the frontrunner until I see Kenneth Branagh.

  2. At 83 years old, Christopher Plummer is at the top of his game. Coming off his only Oscar nomination (for 2009’s The Last Station), Plummer does absolute wonders in Beginners. As Hal, he gives many fascinating traits to a man who so desperately loves to live, but understands that his time is limited. Hal is loving, restrained, ill, confused, and, most importantly, tender to the needs of other.

Whether he’s Captain Von Trapp, or Mike Wallace, or Aristotle, or Christopher Newport, or Leo Tolstoy, Christopher Plummer has long been able to hit his mark and shake things up. I’ve seen him as good, but never better, than he is in Beginners. Give the man an Oscar.

  3. Thanks for these great tips on Brooks and Plummer.

I've read some good reviews on Brooks, which is why I put him so high on the list (#17). But none of the reviews were specifically talking about the Oscar race, so it's good to hear from someone who has actually seen Drive and thinks he has the momentum to carry through to February.

I'm seeing Beginners later today and can't wait to see how Plummer does. The part certainly seems baity and I agree completely that he is overdue.

Thanks to both of you for checking out my blog.

  4. I enjoy your blog. I don't think an Oscar prediction can come from an actors website as it does above with Christopher Plummer. I have not seen Drive, but this review makes me want to see it and this reviewer does think Brooks should be in the top five!

  5. I'm glad you're enjoying my blog! I know that I enjoy writing it!

I completely agree that actor and fan sites have to be taken with a grain of salt. And at the same time know that all of us are fans of some actors, films, genres, etc., and that always influences our predictions. (The same can be said of the academy voters themselves, of course!) I try to read as many sites and sources as possible to help weed out the obvious fan-focused predictions. And incontention.com is one of my favorites too.

Thanks again for reading my blog, and keep coming back!

You have Colin Farrell for the 84th Oscars (Alternate #41) for At Swim-Two-Birds. That film has not been made.

Thanks for the head's up! At one point it was scheduled for this year, but I just checked IMDB and not only is "At Swim-Two Birds" now scheduled for 2013, but Colin's name has been removed.... Just one of the many joys of early predicting, I guess!

Thanks for checking out my blog.
