What I Saw: Midnight In Paris (84th Oscar Race)

EDITORS NOTE: These predictions were made in May 2011 and reflect what my thinking was at that time.  I have updated my predictions since then, but leave these on the blog for a historical record. For the most updated list of predictions, go to the Tracker Pages in the upper right hand corner of this blog.

What I Saw: Midnight In Paris

Oscar Chances:

Original Screenplay: Woody Allen (currently ranked 6. Could easily slip in with a nomination)

Best Picture (currently ranked 11)

Lead Actress: Rachel McAdams (currently ranked 33)

There are several categories and performances in this film that are currently unranked, but which will get varying levels of consideration in my next round of predictions. While some may make an appearance in the long list, I do not currently see them making the top 20 rankings.

Lead Actor: Owen Wilson
Supporting Actress: Kathy Bates
Supporting Actress: Alison Pill
Supporting Actor: Corey Stoll
Supporting Actor: Tom Hiddleston
Supporting Actor: Adrien Brody
Supporting Actor: Michael Sheen
Art Direction: Anne Seibel and Helene Dubreuil

What I Saw: The Hangover Part II (84th Oscar Race)

EDITORS NOTE: These predictions were made in May 2011 and reflect what my thinking was at that time.  I have updated my predictions since then, but leave these on the blog for a historical record. For the most updated list of predictions, go to the Tracker Pages in the upper right hand corner of this blog.

What I Saw: The Hangover Part II

Oscar Chances: I had always predicted this film’s chances to be slim. Now that I’ve seen it, even those slim chances are fading away.

Adapted Screenplay: Craig Mazin, Scott Armstrong and Todd Phillips (ranked 49 as of 4/25/11, will likely drop off the list with the next set of predictions).

Song: Christophe Beck (ranked 29 as of 4/28/11, will drop lower with the next set of predictions).

A long weekend means it’s time for an Open Thread!

I most likely won’t be able to post any new predictions this weekend, so hopefully the four new sets that I posted today can hold you over. I will, however, have the ability to check comments, so this seemed like a perfect time to have an open thread.

Feel free to introduce yourself. Tell me what you like (or don’t like) about this blog. Which predictions do you think I’m getting right or wrong? Which movies haven’t I noticed that I should?

One thing that I have been particularly thrilled about is that people are actually looking at the “Genre Category” page, where I make predictions for animated films, documentaries, foreign language and shorts. I’ve always been somewhat surprised that other Oscar prediction sites often leave these categories off of their lists, and I’m glad to see that there are other people like me who are interested in these categories!

Which makes me think that some of my readers may have great suggestions for these categories based on the films you have seen. For the folks outside the United States: What films are currently showing or hotly anticipated in your nation or region that might be contestants for Best Foreign Language film? I know that there were several from Cannes that will be appearing on my next set of predictions, but maybe there are others out there that you’ve heard of.

Or maybe you love documentaries, or attended Hot Docs in Toronto?

Or maybe you’ve heard about a new short film in the making that the media hasn’t begun covering yet?

I’d love to hear about any and all of these!

What I Saw: Jumping The Broom (84th Oscar Race)

EDITORS NOTE: These predictions were made in May 2011 and reflect what my thinking was at that time.  I have updated my predictions since then, but leave these on the blog for a historical record. For the most updated list of predictions, go to the Tracker Pages in the upper right hand corner of this blog.

What I Saw: Jumping The Broom

Oscar Chances: My last predictions in the lead actess category were made on April 7, and showed Angela Bassett ranked 32. Both Loretta Devine and Valarie Pettiford may receive some consideration in my next update to the long lists for lead and supporting actress. But as is the case with most perfectly enjoyable summer romantic comedies (and this one is enjoyable), I’m thinking that the best bet for recognition comes from the Golden Globes instead of the Oscars. I also think that we’ll see some Image Award nominations.
