84th Oscar Film Editing Updates (1/30/12)

In this category I only predicted 3 of the eventual 5 nominees (60%), meaning that next year I must try to remember how closely this tracks with the best picture contenders (like The Descendants and Moneyball), even at the expense of films which draw attention to their editing (like Drive or Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy).

I am guessing that Moneyball and The Descendants got in here based largely upon their best picture status, so I am placing The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo above them, on the theory that the editing really was the highlight there. Both The Artist and Hugo have a good chance of winning this category. The smarter choice is probably The Artist due to its front-runner status in the best picture race, but I am sticking with Hugo because it includes scenes where they actually show how editing is done.

1. Thelma Schoonmaker for Hugo (Predicted Winner) (previous rank 1)
2. Anne-Sophie Bion for The Artist (previous rank 4)
3. Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (previous rank 5)
4. Christopher Tellefsen for Moneyball (previous rank 8)
5. Kevin Trent for The Descendants (previous rank 10)

A Look Back: Cinematography, Film Editing and Visual Effects

In the final analysis, I correctly predicted all 5 of the Cinematography nominees (100%), 4 of the 5 Visual Effects nominees (80%), and 3 out of 5 Film Editing nominees (60%). My “Close Scores”  were fairly high early on in these categories, thanks to the presence of several famous cinematographers and the summer release dates and popular advertising associated with most of the visual effects contenders. For film editing, I must try to remember how closely this tracks with the best picture contenders (like The Descendants and Moneyball), even at the expense of films which draw attention to their editing (like Drive or Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy).

What I predicted correctly, and when I came close.

84th Oscar Makeup Updates (1/30/12)

I correctly predicted 2 out of the 3 nominees in this category (66%). Interestingly, I was actually predicting a makeup nomination for Albert Nobbs from March through November, but mistakenly backed down when reviews of the film began to surface, reminding us that these branches really do examine the quality of the craft itself, rather than the film as a whole.

1. Mark Coulier and J. Roy Helland for The Iron Lady (Predicted Winner) (previous rank 1)
2. Nick Dudman, Amanda Knight and Lisa Tomblin for Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2 (previous rank 3)
3. Martial Corneville, Lynn Johnston and Matthew W. Mungle for Albert Nobbs (previous rank 6)

84th Oscar Costume Design Updates (1/30/12)

I correctly predicted 4 out of 5 of the eventual nominees in this category (80%), with Anonymous ranked number 10 in my last set of predictions.

The eventual winner of this category is difficult to predict, but Hugo includes both period costumes and more fantastical elements during the reconstructions of the Melies films, so I’m giving it the edge for now.

1. Sandy Powell for Hugo (Predicted Winner) (previous rank 1)
2. Michael O’Connor for Jane Eyre (previous rank 2)
3. Mark Bridges for The Artist (previous rank 3)
4. Arianna Phillips for W.E. (previous rank 5)
5. Lisy Christi for Anonymous (previous rank 10)

84th Oscar Art Direction Updates (1/30/12)

I correctly predicted 4 out of the 5 nominees for this category (80%), although I severely underestimated Midnight In Paris despite the fact that Allen’s films often get recognized in this category.

1. Dante Ferretti and Francesca Lo Schiavo for Hugo (Predicted Winner) (previous rank 1)
2. Laurence Bennett and Robert Gould for The Artist (previous rank 2)
3. Stuart Craig and Stephanie McMillan for Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2 (previous rank 3)
4. Rick Carter and Lee Sandales for War Horse (previous rank 5)
5. Anne Siebel and Helene Dubreuil for Midnight In Paris (previous rank 20)

A Look Back: Art Direction, Costume Design and Makeup

In the final analysis, I correctly predicted 4 out of the 5 nominees for Art Direction and Costume Design (80%), and 2 out of 3 nominees for Makeup (66%). Somehow I had forgotten that Woody Allen films often do well with the art directors (I had it ranked 20), while the other categories had my missed nominee at rank 10 and 6. Thanks to early set photos and the propensity that these categories have for period pieces, my “Close Score” was also pretty high even very early in the year. Interestingly, I was actually predicting a makeup nomination for Albert Nobbs from March through November, but mistakenly backed down when reviews of the film began to surface, reminding us that these branches really do examine the quality of the craft itself, rather than the film as a whole.

84th Oscar Adapted Screenplay Updates (1/27/12)

I correctly predicted 4 out of 5 of these (80%) with the Ides Of March being number 6 in my previous predictions. In the end, I think that this will come down to The Descendants versus Moneyball for the win. I may change my mind between now and the ceremony, but for now I’m going with The Descendants.

1. Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash for The Descendants (Predicted Winner) (previous rank 1)
2. Aaron Sorkin and Steven Zaillian for Moneyball (previous rank 2)
3. John Logan for Hugo (previous rank 4)
4. George Clooney and Grant Heslov for The Ides Of March (previous rank 6)
5. Bright O’Connor and Peter Straughaun for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (previous rank 5)

For a slightly more irreverent take on this race, check out Jason’s analysis.
