New Poll: What Should I See Next?

This weekend, we have two top Oscar contenders showing. Should I see Take Shelter in limited release, to improve its box office and increase its chances of showing in a theater near you? Or should I go with The Ides Of March, which has chances in multiple categories? Or should I throw caution to the wind and see something completely different? Vote for your choice in the comments!

1911; Abduction; The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975; Circumstance; Dirty Girl;

Dolphin Tale; Dream House; The Guard; The Ides Of March; Killer Elite;

Love Crime; Machine Gun Preacher; Margaret; Mozart’s Sister; The Mill And The Cross;

My Afternoons With Margueritte; Passione; Point Blank; Puncture; Real Steel;

Senna; Take Shelter; Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil; Weekend; What’s Your Number?

If your favorite movie isn’t here, feel free to recommend it anyway. It’s possible that it is not showing in my area, or that I have already seen it, but it’s also possible that you’ll become my new best friend for having recommended something new.

  1. I would say The Ides of March... but I'm more curious to hear about Take Shelter.

  3. Thanks guys! I can't wait to see both Gosling in Ides and Shannon in Shelter.

    Funny about all of the different titles for "The Ides Of March". I've seen titles ranging from "Farragut North" (the original name of the play), "Washington Subway", and now "Games Of Control"!

    Glad you won't have to wait too long for this one though!

  5. Thanks for these. The Guard has been on my radar for a while, but always ends up just missing the cut off (Oh, How I wish I could see more movies!)

    Have you had a chance to see Tucker & Dale? Is it any good? It looks like it could go either way between "so bad it's good" and "so bad it's bad" Ha!

    Thanks for checking me out!

  6. I'm glad someone else brought up "Tucker & Dale vs. Evil," because that was going to be my recommendation too. Watching on VOD tonight.

    Also, a quick note about "Dream House." While it's quickly becoming one of the most critically reviled films of the year (it's RottenTomatoes score is lower than Rob Schneider's "Grown Ups"), it happens to be directed by Jim Sheridan of "My Left Foot" fame, and stars Daniel Craig and Naomi Watts. I'm truly fascinated how this film went to absolute hell.

    Seems like a bunch of great (or at least interesting) films are in the theaters at the moment. It's really hard to go wrong (unless you see "What's Your Number").

  7. Thanks David! I'll be interested to read your review of Tucker & Dale.

    I haven't read a lot on Dream House, but from what I have read it sounds like they messed themselves up by giving away too much in the trailer. I wonder if the reviews would be better if they had kept the secret better.

    I'm not sure why What's Your Number is getting such hate. Seems like it is perfect for its demographic, and most of the Rom-Coms are the same anyway. But like you, I doubt I'll end up seeing that one.

  8. I'd recommend Machine Gun Preacher. Yes I know it's trashed by critics but I really think people should see it for themselves and make up their own mind. It got a warm reception from people who saw the film at a local film festival. The story itself is fascinating as it's based on a real person who's still living and the performances are compelling, particularly Butler in the lead role.

    My friend saw 'Tucker & Dale vs. Evil' and loved it. I might rent that one as I like Alan Tudyk.

  9. Thanks Ruth! I just checked RottenTomatoes and there is quite a discrepancy between critics versus viewers, so maybe there is indeed something there.

    I'm slowly warming to the possibility of seeing Tucker & Dale. I'm not usually a fan of this genre, though, so it will definitely be a rental rather than in cinemas.
