84th Oscar Original Song Updates (2011-2012 Awards Season) (6/7/11)

EDITORS NOTE: These predictions were made in June 2011 and reflect what my thinking was at that time.  I have updated my predictions since then, but leave these on the blog for a historical record. For the most updated list of predictions, go to the Tracker Pages in the upper right hand corner of this blog.

The song category is always a particularly difficult one to predict, but it’s “never too early” to try anyway! The award for best song goes to the writer of the song, but where I haven’t been able to find that information I have used the performer or score composer from the movie to help make my predictions. Here are today’s rankings for the 84th Oscar Original Song race, with previous ranking shown in parenthesis after each entry.

  1. This list is ambitious - particularly in a category that is super crazy and unpredictable. Based off the list you provided - I would predict the top 5 to be.

    The Artist
    Cars 2
    Happy Feed 2
    On The Road
    War Horse

  2. Thanks RC! You're top 5 looks pretty good too.

I see that we both have two kid/family type movies (Muppets/Winnie The Pooh and Cars/Happy Feet), which feels about right for this category. I get a bit of an "Enchanted" feel from The Muppets, but that may just be because of Amy Adams. I've heard that there is a campaign to get the muppets to host the Oscars, which sounds like a terrible idea to me, but a song nod would feel ok... It would give them a chance to make an appearance, but wouldn't get tedious the way that making them the hosts would.

I've read conflicting reports about whether On The Road will be ready in time, but I'm hopeful that it will be and am looking forward to the film. And the Tony's love for War Horse (the play) could easily carry over to the movie.

All of the Cannes reviews for The Artist talk about how it is "silent", but there definitely is a score for this movie, which I suspect is a big part of why it works. I haven't been able to figure out if this also includes any songs (music plus lyrics). Were you one of the lucky folks who has gotten to see it already?

    P.S. I love your strangecultureblog.com!

  4. I've also heard good things about the Rio soundtrack. (I usually save the animated films for TV or DVD, so I haven't seen it yet, unfortunately). Is there one or two songs that particularly stick out for you from the film? Which ones do you think have the best chance at a nomination?

  5. Taio Cruz's "Telling The World" certainly deserves to win!

  6. I think RIO should get the nomination for the BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM as well as the ORIGINAL SONG and ORIGINAL MUSIC SCORE. The film is just breathtaking, heartwarming and original.

As far as the original song goes, I think Jamie Fox's "Love Fly" should win the Oscar.

  7. Thanks Anonymous. I have Rio on my long list for the song category, which I have updated here: http://nevertooearlymoviepredictions.blogspot.com/2011/11/84th-oscar-original-song-updates-2011.html

My only concern is whether its early release date will leave it forgotten. Although since they do special screenings, it may not matter as much in this category as some of the others.
