Calendar Page Updated

News came yesterday that the Academy has changed its dates for announcing nominations.

The nomination announcement will now occur on January 10, 2013, with the awards ceremony following on February 24, 2013.

I have updated the Oscar Calendar page, which also includes an extensive list of film festivals and movie release dates.

If all goes well, I should have some updated reviews and predictions coming soon as well!

    1. I suspect they'll both be eligible, but whether the Academy will go for them is another story. I suspect they'll stick to more traditional fare.

    2. As much as I love how original and different The Cabin in the Woods is, I don't think the academy will consider it serious enough. :)

    3. Yeah, I think they'll go with much more predictable choices at this point.

  2. Yo - sent you an email the other day. Did you get it, or did I send it to an account you don't check all that often?

    1. Hi Ryan,

I'm not finding the email. Dylan and Joel have warned me that my screenname might be too long that people might mistype it.

  3. Interesting announcement I must say, so we'll know the Oscar nominations before the Golden Globes then??

    1. Ruth, Yeah, although the Globes nominees will be known ahead of time, which is really the better way to look at it in terms of predictions. After all, the Globe winners aren't really in much danger of missing the Oscar Nominations anyway. (at least most years.)

  4. They're totally stealing the Golden Globes' thunder by announcing earlier. :)

    1. It's more like preventing the GG from stealing the Oscar's thunder. :)

I don't know what you guys think, but to me the GG has become more like a giant party.

    2. @Sonal, I think people are mixing apples and oranges a little bit, since it will be the Oscar Noms that come out prior to the Globes Winners.

Interestingly, it's the completely irrelevant People's Choice awards that may get hurt the most. Their awards show is January 9, with the Oscar nominations coming out the next morning!

    3. @A Recollector, The Globes are definitely a bit party, but I do like that they give the comedies a chance in their own category. I usually try to see most of the films nominated for best comedy even if I know that some of them aren't going to translate into the Oscar season. Last year, it meant that I got to see both Carnage and We Need To Talk About Kevin as a result!

  6. Haven't seen you update your predictions for a while. I assume you'll get busier in the next few months? What do you think of the hot shots that are already out such as Moonrise Kingdom, The Master, The Silver Linings Playbook, Argo, etc.?

    1. I've seen The Master and Moonrise Kingdom, as well as Beasts Of The Southern Wild. I think that all of them have a pretty good at nominations, but I don't see any of them taking Best Picture at this point. Joachim Phoenix could win though. I haven't seen Argo or Silver Linings yet, but have been hearing good things about both.

I hope to get back into the predictions game on a regular basis soon. I've just been really busy with some unexpected projects back in the real world.

    2. I can understand Moonrise and Beasts, but I personally think has atleast the chance of being nominated.

Oh, I guess I shoud ask this now: Magic Mike, surprise hit, directed by Steven Soderbergh, and featuring Matthew McConaughey, whom I heard is already getting praise for Bernie, and Killer Joe. Any chance for Magic Mike to get ANY nominations?

    3. *think Master has chance of being a big contender.

    4. I haven't seen Magic Mike, but a lot of people are predicting McConaughey for supporting actor there. I think he's in the running (maybe top 10 or 15), but something tells me that they'll go for more prestigious pictures in that race and that "Magic" will get lost in the shuffle.

I think McConaughey has a much better chance next year in Jean-Marc Vallee's "The Dallas Buyer's Club", which has much more of a social commentary to it that adds a bit more weight in terms of Oscars.

  7. Did you hear the news? The person that is going to host the Oscars this year is Sth MacFarlane. Not joking, there's a Youtube video about it.
