86th Oscar Best Picture Updates (2013-2014 Awards Season) (10/16/13)

I’ve been away from the Oscar game for a while, but instead of crying over spilled milk, let’s see if I can get back on track. More categories will be coming over the next few weeks, but Best Picture seems like a good place to start again.

As luck would have it, I saw two of my top five films over the past two weekends (Gravity and Captain Phillips), and my predicted winner is opening this weekend in the form of Steve McQueen’s Twelve Years A Slave. You know that I’ll be first in line!

  1. Great list, so many of those I want to see!

Isn't Blue Is The Warmest Color out of the oscar race? (in foreign film category at least) I thought I heard that, because of the release date, it didn't meet the academy's requirements.

    1. Thanks Chris!

Blue did indeed miss the deadline for the foreign film category (and France has submitted Renoir instead). But it will get a U.S. release this year which makes it eligible for every category EXCEPT the foreign film race -- which seems rather strange but it actually happens quite often, just usually not with films that have such a high profile!

  2. Aww, lovely to see Much Ado make the list. Think it'll be a bit of a stretch to see it get nominated, but wouldn't it be amazing if it did in amongst some of those films?

    1. Thanks Jaina! I saw Much Ado and liked it a lot myself. Unfortunately Oscar voters tend to have short memories, and I don't think it will get much of a campaign from the studio, which is why it shows up so low on my list. It will probably show up a bit higher in my adapted screenplay predictions, although still not likely to break into the top 5.

  3. Totally agree with your top 10 prediction. I think this year it will be 12 Years a Slave vs. Gravity.

    Good to have you back!

    1. Thanks my friend! It's good to be back.

I could see that match up, with Twelve arguing for historical importance and Gravity arguing technological innovations.

  4. Nice one! It will definitely be a battle between 12 and Gravity. Would be nice if HER makes it through the final round of Oscar though

    1. Thanks Daniel! I haven't seen it yet, but I can imagine Her might have a better chance of making it for best screenplay (and its currently in my top 10 for best actor). I do think it will get a lot of critics love though!
