Last week I saw No Other Woman, which currently holds the honor of being the highest grossing Filipino film ever. (Read my review HERE.)
This week we have a clear Oscar contender in the mix: Martha Marcy May Marlene, which I am currently predicting will receive a Lead Actress nomination for Elizabeth Olsen, and which is also listed in my top 20 for Original Screenplay, Supporting Actor, Best Director, and Best Picture. In addition to receiving high praise at Sundance, it was recently nominated for Gotham awards for breakthrough director, breakthrough actress and ensemble performance.
Unless John Hawkes personally shows up at my door and forces me to join a weird cult, I’m pretty sure that this will be the film I see this weekend. But if you somehow think that I’ve got it all wrong (or are worried that Oscar-chasing is a cult of its own), let me know in the comments!
Anonymous; Blackthorn; Detective Dee And The Mystery Of The Phantom Flame (Di Renjie); Finding Joe; Footloose;
Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life (Gainsbourg: Vie Heroique); Hell And Back Again; In Time; Johnny English Reborn; Margin Call;
Martha Marcy May Marlene; Mozart’s Sister; My Afternoons With Margueritte; Oka!; Oranges And Sunshine;
Paranormal Activity 3; Point Blank; Puss In Boots; Real Steel; The Skin I Live In (La Piel Que Habito);
The Rum Diary; The Thing; The Three Musketeers; The Way; Weekend;
If your favorite movie isn’t here, feel free to recommend it anyway. It’s possible that it is not showing in my area, or that I have already seen it, but it’s also possible that you’ll become my new best friend for having recommended something new.

if i were you - i'd watch "MMMM" with Elizabeth Olsen, or "Anonymous" (yeah, i like looking at myself...)
ReplyDeleteIf I were you, I would watch MMMM, Weekend, Margin Call and also try Take Shelter, Miss Bala.
ReplyDeleteYeah MMMM is at the top of my new release list.
ReplyDeleteI have no problem with you seeing MMMM, but if you have time, try to see one of the Antonio Banderas movies too.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, Rum Diary is a no go. It got mixed reviews, so it's chances of anything other than Beest Actor are really low. (I say that because Sean Penn was nominated Best Actor for I Am Sam, despite it getting mildly mediocre reviews at best and negtive reviews at worst.)
Been hearing good things about Martha Marcy May Marlene and obviously, there might be some Oscar implications so that should be a good fit for you :D
ReplyDeleteI was wondering about that myself. I really want to see Oranges & Sunshine at my local indie theater, but might check out Margin Call instead. Take Shelter looks really creepy but I'm intrigued by Shannon's performance.
ReplyDeleteBtw, it's amazing how the Olsen girls all look similar, Elizabeth looks just like her twin sisters Mary-Kate & Ashley.
@Anonymous--If I do see your namesake movie I'll be sure to think of you!
ReplyDelete@Aziza--Weekend, Margin Call and Miss Bala all sound really good too, and I've already seen Take Shelter and loved it!
@Bonjour Tristesse: Indeed, I think it will be be of the top indie performances of the year!
@Anonymous 2-- The Skin I Live In also sounds intriguing (I'l probably skip Puss In Boots). My challenge is that I usually only get to see one film in theaters each week. The Rum Diary project sounded interesting when I first heard about it, but I've been slowly losing interest, and now that the reviews aren't great I'll probably skip it.
@Castor, Most of us Oscar predictors have been predicting Olsen for most of the year. Oddly, a few high-profile sites have suddenly dropped her just as the film is appearing, in favor of a slate of former nominees. But I'm sticking with her (at least until I see the film) because Hollywood usually likes to welcome at least one newcomer into the fold.
@Ruth, agree about Oranges & Sunshine and Margin Call. And I highly recommend Take Shelter, as both Shannon and Chastain are fabulous. I've somehow managed to avoid most of the twins' work, since they don't seem like my type of films, but I do know who they are and agree that there is a strong family resemblance.
Thanks all!
I wish MMMM was playing close to me I would go and see that fo shizzle.
ReplyDeleteThanks Adam. I'm looking forward to MMMM and will let you know how it turns out.
ReplyDeleteThanks for checking out my blog!
MMMM is definitely the right choice, even though My Afternoons With Margueritte looks intriguing.
ReplyDeleteThanks MovieBlog8, I did end up seeing MMMM, and should have a review up in the next day or so.
